Coffee shops in Banda Aceh are public spaces that have a social function as a place for interaction, discussion, and information exchange. However, this space has historically been more synonymous with male dominance, so the presence of women is still often faced with social stigma and judgments influenced by cultural norms and the application of Islamic sharia in Aceh. This condition makes research on women's visibility in public spaces important to be carried out. This study aims to analyze the concept of coffee shops as a public space that is friendly to women and examine the form of public interpretation of the presence of women in coffee shops in Banda Aceh. This research uses a qualitative approach with data collection techniques through observation, interviews and documentation. The results of the study show that the visibility of women in coffee shops is increasing as the function of coffee shops as a more inclusive public space develops. However, women's participation in public spaces still faces various challenges, both in terms of social norms and the provision of facilities. Public acceptance of the presence of women in coffee shops is also still conditional and influenced by age, culture, and perception of social norms. The study concludes that there has been a cultural shift towards the presence of women in coffee shops, although gender stigma is still found. Therefore, efforts are needed to create a more inclusive, safe, and equal public space for all people regardless of gender.
