Abstract

Grave visitation (ziarah kubur) in Nahdlatul Ulama communities is both a devotional practice and a social encounter with local religious memory, exemplary ulama, and communal norms. This study examines the micro-mechanisms through which the IPNU-IPPNU branch in Purwodadi Village, Sragi, Pekalongan, organizes grave visitation as community-based value education and how the experience contributes to strengthening students’ religious identity. A descriptive qualitative design with a naturalistic orientation was employed. Data were generated in April 2026 through semi-structured interviews with eight purposively selected informants representing organizational leaders, a member, advisers, a media officer, and a former administrator; direct observation of grave-visitation activities and weekly religious study; and organizational documentation. Analysis proceeded from initial coding to category development, cross-source comparison, and the formulation of six interrelated themes. The findings identify a value-internalization mechanism that combines routine habituation, educational-historical narration, exemplary leadership, active participation, digital mediation, and intergenerational engagement. Repetition creates continuity; narratives and exemplars give ritual moral-historical meaning; participation and reflection turn students from attendees into actors; while digital and intergenerational mediation extend memory and transmission. The outcomes evidenced in this single-branch case are increased understanding, respect for ulama and ancestors, social solidarity, a sense of belonging, and stronger attachment to local Islamic and NU traditions. The study contributes a contextual model showing that religious values are internalized not through verbal instruction alone, but through an integrated sequence of ritual experience, meaning-making, agency, reflection, and intergenerational transmission. Claims are limited to identity strengthening rather than comprehensive identity formation or religious moderation
